Bay Tree

seyfadesseyfades Posts: 146

I bought an edible bay plant 3 weeks ago, I'm new to growing herbs but love cooking with bay leaves.

I repotted the plant into a 15 cm pot from the 9cm pot it came in and I have left it outside on the patio since.

The top leaves are yellow and the bottom leaves a light green with some white spots, please advice on what I'm doing wrong, I leave the pot to dry out before watering.

Looks ok to me , the yellow is just the young leaves coming through , the white spots look like rain dried on the leaves ? They are quite tough plants

Agreed, have grown a few of these and those are new leaves coming.

  • Bay trees seem to do better in poor soil. If you look at where they grow wild, along coastal paths etc. I killed so many young bay trees with good potting soil. I decided to treat them mean, and success.

Thank you all for the advice, homemade compost for  the pot, topsoil, sharp sand, coir and vermiculite with some BFB fertiliser.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I have a largish bay tree and some of the new growth is yellowish. I don't know why, it's just the way it is but not a problem. Your plant looks fine. I would plant out. It is quite small so I would coddle it this year. Keep it well watered and weed free and it should put on a lot of growth.

Thank you Redwing, can I pick the leaves now or do I need to leave it for a while.

Pick as required but don't strip it.

My bay tree at my last house was huge.  About 9' tall and 5' around.  I pruned it every year, so it was very full.  Yours will likely outgrow that pot, but they tolerate heavy pruning, so potted might be OK. My rear neighbor there had one 15' tall.  Dumb me had never noticed it was a Bay and asked her if she wanted some fresh bay leaves one year.  She just laughed and said I'm well-stocked with Bay leaves.
