French tarragon tends to loose its flavour after 2-3 years so is best replaced or take root cuttings.
That said, I've got a pot of FT that's been going for 3-4yrs and is still ok. Topsoil is fine.

Rosemary is also best refreshed every few years. If you've got some new growth 3-4" long, it's easy to take cuttings which will root quickly this time of year. Rosemary is best grown hard. Topsoil with quite a bit of grit added is good, drainage must be good - it's used to growing in poor gravelly soil on hills and mountains around the Med. so it's used to baking sun and not much water, but don't let it dry out completely. Treat it mean and you'll get the best flavour

If you prefer - just repot the rosemary using topsoil and plenty of grit - and take some cuttings too

My Tarragon smells nice but not a lot of it at the moment the soil seems very soil and weedy . I have tried to remove the weeds as best I can

If it's MPC (multi purpose compost) it'll be ok, but it doesn't last, it breaks down and becomes useless after a year or so. John Innes 3 mixture with added grit is your best bet - you can get small bags from all garden centres - it's not a brand as such, but a recipe for  a soil/loam-based compost created by the John Innes Institute (or something along those lines I think)

It'll be ok for a year or so, add some grit if you've got some, if not, next time

Where do I buy grit and is this essential for all herbs ?

Thanks Pansy is it  for all herbs ?

What ratio to compost and grit would I use ?

roughly 4 handfulls of compost and 1 handful of grit - so about 20% grit - no need to be exact
