I don't think this is a violet ?

Just found this in a shady spot, it's rather nice and if it's not a rampant weed I will keep it.  (Keys are there for 'scale' !)

thanks as always

Yes, it's a violet. I like it! They can spread as their seed pods explode when ripe and the seeds spread far and wide!! If you find them where you don't want them, you can easily pull them out if you're quick!

    Probably Viola soraria 'Freckles' offspring.

Oh thank you !  I hadn't noticed the speckled face until I looked at the photo.  I've got plenty of room for more so I'll take care with any seedlings.

I hope you picked your car keys up ! image

You have to be careful of some of these violets . They can take over and the roots form an impenetrable mat  that you need heavy digging to remove.  Do keep an eye on them.

I am afraid I remove my violets when I see them.

  • Agreed with @lamweedy.

Wild/common/dog violets can be a nightmare to eradicate due the dense, fibrous roots that regenerate into new plants if the tiniest fragment of root is left behind. They explode seeds all over the place and get into every nook and cranny.

They are particularly adept at finding refuge under shrubs, where their root system intertwines in the protection of your beloved shrubs root, making them practically impossible to remove. They are also incredibly resitant to weedkiller.

I'll watch it carefully this summer and make sure it doesn't take over.  Thanks all.
