Growing tomatoes in hanging baskets

I am new to growing vegetables and am keen to grow tomatoes in a hanging basket. I have bought a Tumbling Tom plant but it looks a bit lost! Should I plant more in the same basket or will it grow to fill the space. Help!!

Hi Eddie.Don't worry,a single tumbling tom in a 12 inch basket wont look lost for long. Many stems will eventually hang over the sides laden with fruit.Blue trailing lobelia look nice in the same basket. In larger baskets,3 plants will suffice.

I agree with Peter36. I grow 1 tumbler in a 12 inch basket on a stand and it fills it easily.

Have you got it under cover somewhere? Some cold nights are forecast in the next few days. I plant mine out at the end of May.

I grow one TT in an 18" basket and Maskotka in another - they both overflow their baskets dripping with luvly warm fresh toms mmmmmm roll on late July!

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
  • Thank you all, I look forward to my tomatoes come the summer.
