What to do with overgrown Eucalyptus

imageimage

hi

i have a largeish Eucalyptus tree which I would like to prune to encourage more of the younger leaves to grow. The older leaves are quite marked with brown spots on it. The tree is currently approx 15ft and has two main trunks? Any advice would greatly be appreciated!

I would coppice it ... cutting both trunks right down to the ground ... info here https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=136

I think I'd wait until early March next year, as we're having such a dry spring.  It'll need moisture to send up lots of new shoots.

Some people may be braver than I am and say go for it now ....... image

I would cut it right down as well, and have down with one. They don't mind dry though, do they? Taking into account where they originate from.  I would think the roots are well down in the wet soil.

  • Thank you so much for your advice. So both trunks to ground level- might be brave and do it asap so it can grow nicely this year! Thank you again

I agree and think cutting them down every few years is the best way to grow these otherwise they can quickly turn into huge monsters - some species sold in the UK can get to nearly 100m tall!
