Identify and advice on shrubs
Hi,
Can anybody identify the shrubs in these photos?
We are about to have a sorely needed makeover. Some of them seem to have doubled in size over the last four years since we moved into the property.
Also, can I trim them back without ending up with bushes consisting of twigs with very little foliage?
PS The large shrub on the left is, I believe, St Johns Wort. Its looking a little sparce at present as I got a bit carried away with the pruning but I'm hoping it will grow back.

Can't see the St John's Wort clearly and now all hypericums seem to be called SJ'sW I don't know what it is. Many are best pruned to the ground either all the stems or some of them. Otherwise you end up with a totally shapeless shrub.

I can't zoom in for closer detail but the white flowering shrub and the one on its immediate left look like heather varieties. They can be trimmed but be careful to trim only into green growth as pruning the old wood will most likely kill 'em off.
The others appear (at least from here) to be Hebes and trimming them back within reason would be beneficial but may be too late now if you want them to flower this year. If they aren't Hebes or flowering shrubs, they could be Box or Yew hedging.... just wish the damn laptop would zoom in for a closer inspection
