Fixing privet hedge

Hi all, I am new to this forum and would appreciate any help.

So some idiot tried to get into the garden one night about a year ago by forcing themselves through quite a thick privet hedge, after trying to intwine it back together I thought it would grow back but it hasn't. It has now gone brown and has left a gap so you can see through to the not very nice neighbours garden ???? i do not want to make the gap bigger by removing the dead bit so could anyone advise me what I can use to fill the gap ? As I have no idea and would not want to plant the wrong thing there and have it damage the rest of the hedge.

Thank you

  • Personally, I'd remove the one dead privet and plant another one in its place. You can buy them 6ft high or more and privet is easy enough to push over, twist and pull out, especially if dead. Digging it up may damage the roots of the adjacent privets, but if necessary, use a garden fork so you don't sever roots.

Would remove dead plant, prepare the soil underneath with rooting compound, compost or even chicken manure pellets and topsoil. Privets are pretty hardy and as long as the plant is sufficietnly watered for a few weeks, it should take well. Could be a couple of years or more before it's dense enough to block out your neightbour image
