I think they're supposed to be hardy to -5C. You could take cuttings as insurance or else plant them in pots and shelter them. I suspect it's wet as well as cold that gets them.

My pleasure. I bought some myself a couple of weeks ago and plan to take cutting both to increase and preserve them.
never grew them in teh Belgian garden as I knew they wouldn't cope. Friends treated them as annuals which seemed a waste to me but I never had space in my wee greenhouse which was full of salvias and hostas and a gunnera every winter. Here I shall have a bigger polytunnel so plenty fo space - in theory.
