Brownjng hedge

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some advice as to where I go next with our hedge. OH has trimmed it about 1 foot earlier this year. it is looking rather dead in places.

Any idea if it will grow back? I am beginning to panic a bit!

Thanks in advance x

Difficult to give advice without knowing what species the hedge is.  Privet and other typical shrubs used for hedging will grow back but anything coniferous won't.  If you don't know what the hedge is, could you post a photo?

depends what the hedging plant is veg.

Do you know or can you post a photo for ID? To post a photo, reduce the size of the image and start with the camera icon above the typing box. I reduce mine to 30% of original

  • Sorry the photos arent fantastic guys!

we have only recently moved here so im unsure about the history of the hedge. Can not be sure if it was already a bit brown or if all of this is a result of one trim (which im doubting)

we are deciding what to plant in the bed alongside the hedge, but wanted to see if the hedge recovered before we decide.

Looks like privet to me so I'm certain that it will be fine and it will grow back pretty quickly now that spring is here.  A good tip for trimming hedges is to trim them slightly narrower at the top than at the base which helps light get to the lower parts, so bear that in mind when the next trim is needed. image

  • Thanks Bob... I can breathe a sigh of relief now!!

I was so worried it was going to die on us!

Thank you, will take note of that x

Check that there are little buds beginning to grow on that particularly bare section as there could possibly be something else wrong if there isn't.  Trimming actually encourages growth on a healthy privet hedge so trimming won't cause issues by itself.  You could also feed the hedge (blood, fish and bone fertlizer sprinked near the roots is ideal) and, if your weather is anything like it is here, it could be a bit dry so a good watering might be a good idea. image

  • There do appear a few new shoots but they are few and far in between. I will get to feeding and watering first thing tomorrow. x
