Potato grow bags
in Fruit & veg
Hi again,
I received such a good advice the first time I posted so thought I would try again.
Managed to finally get to the garden centre and picked up some first earlies on sale. They are called Pentland Javelin and I plan to grow them in a potato growing bag using soil from an unopened grow bag. They will be outside as the weather in North Wales is quite warm at the moment.
Is there anything special I need to do? I have put six potato seeds to chit in an egg box. Do I leave them for a week as recommended before planting? Should I only put one potato seed in each grow bag?
Sorry for the questions. Put it down to me being an over thinking Virgo! ????
Thanks in advance guys

Personally, I think that chitting lark is a load of bunkum. The reason I say this is because I've just noticed potatoes coming up in my veg patch that were missed when I harvested last year.
I also dug one up by mistake and put the spade 3/4 through the potato. I noticed it was already chitting itself. I put the damaged thing back in the ground and it's growing!
I think potatoes are tough as old boots and will grow wherever and whatever but that's just my opinion and others might have different views.
I think Monty Don on a recent GW episode said 3 potatoes per green potato bag but put them deep and only partially fill with soil. When the leaves grow through, top up and top up during the season. I'm sure this advice will be available on YouTube.
I'm also a Virgo! He he.
Thanks Cloggie
I have planted three in a grow bag this morning. Weather is sunny but windy so I think they will be OK. Thank you for your help ☺
Remember to water them regularly once they start to grow strongly. I found with the bags the amount of leaf tended to stop rain getting into the bag and the compost got quite dry at times. Not a problem early days but keep an eye on them as they get going

Thanks raisingirl, will do ☺
