Lawn in need of tlc
No matter how much I rake, mow and feed my lawn it never seems to grow properly. It's quite threadbare and contains a lot of weed. The grass looks thin and worn but I have no children or pets wearing it out. I would love a lush green lawn but I am at my wits end. I could go months not mowing and it won't grow. Please help.

Hi Cathy - is the lawn in a shady position? That makes it hard for grass to thrive.
If there are lots of surrounding hedges, trees or well filled borders, that can also take a lot of water and nutrients away from the grass, making it difficult for it to grow well.
The other issue can be the ground it's growing in. What is the soil like and is it compacted?
Normally, a good weed and feed product at this time of year will help with getting rid of weeds, and will promote the growth of the grass. You can then oversow at a later date to help fill in any bare areas.

I do have a couple of mature trees and shrubs but not that close to the lawn. The soil under the grass is pretty sandy. I use a well known feed and weed product but it appears to have no effect. I can't really afford to rip it up and start again.
It's probably lack of moisture Cathy. Sandy soil drains quickly and has less nutrients, so it may be that if you really want grass there, you'll just have to keep feeding and spending time on it. I don't think there's an easy solution unfortunately.
You could try using a grass seed which is suitable for your soil, and sow it mixed in with a little topsoil to give it a chance to germinate, and then feed regularly with something like seaweed which will help to boost growth. You'll need to water regularly too.
It might be easier to get rid of the grass altogether though, and opt for soemthing else. Often we have to admit defeat, even when we desperately want something!
