Dune like plants?!

Hello guys,

I've recently moved in with the father in law for a short time, and I am in the process of sorting his 800 square yard garden. I have managed to mow through the grass that hasn't been done for around 3 years but I noticed there are dune-like plants spread all over the garden. Initially it was just grass, and that's how he wants it back to. Any ideas on how to get rid? Some people have suggested digging them out etc but if there's another way to try first I'd rather do that.

any ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received.

many thanks

Bobby

We are going to need some photo's Bobby, one of a whole plant and a close-up of the leaves.

Is the ground normally very wet Bobby?

If it is normally a bit wet, those could be sedges.  Sedge leaves are triangular in cross-section if you cut one.

  • its is quite boggy, but a lot better now the grass has been cut very short.

These are rushes (Juncus). Regular mowing will probably get rid of them, or at least stop them from getting tussocky.

Looks like rushes (Juncus effusus) to me. Easy to get out if you use the divide and win technique. Loosen around the edges with a gardfen fork until you dislodge one bit . You will find it is lots of separate small clumps making up the one big one and you can pull these out by hand. Remove any stubborn bits of root at the end. They do love boggy soil, but they self seed all over my garden whether it is boggy or not. There's an endless supply of seed in the marshy parts of the rough pasture next door.
