any help appreciated.

Leycesteria formosa. It seeds around and maybe not what your mum planted in the pot

The leaves are far to thin compared with other pictures of that plant & it never flowers.

i thought it might be from the bamboo family?

bamboo is in the grasses family, that's not a grass. image

Someone else will turn up soon to ID it for you

imageHere's one that does flower (and berry) Helen421 (the shrub to the left of the pic), you'll notice it's half the size of an old apple tree and gets as wide (there's a shed behind that hedge).

Be careful where you put it.

I was tempted to pull it out but as always, as soon as I thought this, it looked beautiful.  It has hollow stems like bamboo and drips with "pheasant" berries late in the year when a lot of stuff is over.  It's semi-evergreen but looks pretty scruffy in deep winter.

    For now, she's staying! image
