Help planting Hedges

I want to plant Firethorn hedging in planters but don't know if they will survive. The planters are only about a foot deep,not sure how good the quality of the soil is. Its like a thin compost type soil. I want them to grow quite tall but don't know if they would? How deep do the roots need to be?
