trying to choose a small hardy succulent

I haven't had much experience with succulents and I'm looking for a small, compact agave or similar kind of hardy succulent for my gravel garden. I don't really want anything for that spot which is going to grow bigger than about 50cm. Can anybody recommend anything? there is such a bewildering choice!
