Lawn weed trouble

i have a couple of patches of lawn that have a pale green weed beginning to spread.what's best treatment for this? I've not sacrificed yet this year and hope it's not too late to do this? Or do you advise I dig that patch out to get all bit's of root out? Also does anyone know why the grass grows so clumpy? Thankyou. imageimage

Thats interesting Pansyface.  Thanks for the info on the clumps.  I do have two dogs (boys) who use the lawn to pee.  Having said that I do put scotts Lawn builder down around now and I scatter it by hand as I believe it is a gentle product but I'm sure some areas could be from heavy handedness.

If it was dog pee it would most likely be a lush ring of grass with a dead brown centre in my experience.

Ive just started the seasonal game of chase the dog with a watering can to dilute its pee before it takes effect now that the lawn is drying out.
