Composting pond weed

We put pond weed in our compost bin [after it has been left a while to allow creatures to get back into pond].  However, I have noticed that our council green bin service lists 'pond weed and residues' as one of the items NOT to be put in green bin for waste recycling.  Does anyone know the reason for this?

    I compost mine, tons of it.

    I compost mine too. Never had any problems with it.
