Hedge not growing at the bottom

I'm really not a gardener, so please keep advice simple.

I have moved into a house and the hedge at the front is not growing at the bottom, in fact it is totally bar as you can see in the pictures. What can I do to get it growing?

  • Not that I know of. Next door's is the same, but further down the street it is fine.

Could it have had a low hedge planted in front of it?  Something like euonymus, perhaps?  The shading would make the leaves drop on the hedge behind.  Might be worth asking the next door neighbours if they know anything...

It certainly looks as if there's been something in front of the hedge in the past. Increased light, some Feed watering and an organic mulch should perk it up.

  • This is a new build estate and I am the first to move in so nothing was planted in front. In the 2 years I've been here it has always been like that. Was hoping that it would just grow.

How do I get more light to it? Do I need to cut the branches below/above to stimulate growth there?

I'd try feeding, watering and mulching it to start with, as Dove suggests, and see if that has the desired effect.  You could stimulate it to sprout again from near the base by cutting it back very hard, but you'd be virtually hedgeless for a bit - so it's probably better to try the feed option first.

I agree with Liriodendron ... I would reduce it's height by half ... that, along with the feeding, watering and mulching should stimulate growth from lower down ... but as she says, you would be 'virtually hedgeless' for a while.
