Madame Alfred Carriere

I have decided I would like to plant this rose up and around my porch.  It is a large oak porch and I want to plant 1 each side of the porch rather than 1 which grows up, over and down the other side.  Anyone any experience of growing this rose?

  • Thank you - that has confirmed it for me.  I don't have a problem keeping a firm hold.  I had Cecile Brunner growing up the front of my house and that needed regular management.  Unfortunately as beautiful as it is with its one flush I am looking for a repeat flowerer this time.  Heard fantastic reports about MAC although I have heard it can be slow to start flowering.  What is your experience?

  • Ha, thanks.

I can only confirm what pansyface wrote: Madame Alfred Carrière can grow very tall indeed. It will flower... when it wants, usually very prolific. I love its roses with their unkempt look, nice scent, foliage smells like pepper.

I have this rose around an arch. It was a tad limited on flowers in year one but has been brilliant ever since. Lovely scent. You do have to keep on top of the growth but I found it easy to train and well worth the effort.

I feed mine and also apply a spray in early spring to limit black spot.

good choice I say. Here is mine for years one, two and three If you want an idea of growth rate.

Great pics of your Madame Alfred Carrière, Tootles. I have taken the liberty to put photo of year 3 in a more conventional orientation.image

    Hi there,

My Madame Alfred Carrière rose has just started flowering. Yesterday I picked one rose and took it indoors so my wife and I could enjoy its delicious perfume. Actually, it is more scented indoors than outdoors. I also like its dishevelled, unpretentious look.image

It does look gorgeous.   May have to find one when I get a pergola built.  Here it is pictured on David Austin's site to give an idea of size - http://www.davidaustinroses.com/eu/mme-alfred-carriere
