Could anyone help me identify this tree?

Hello everyone,

I wondered if you lovely people could help me. We have recently moved to the west coast of the Scottish Highlands and have a tree in our garden which we are having great trouble identifying. I've included pictures for you all to look at.

The tree stands at around 40 metres tall and is an evergreen, however we have never seen these particular leaves before(leaf dimensions are roughly 2cmx1cm)image

It also has a curious shift in the appearance of the bark, around halfway up the tree. Top: image Middle: image Base: image

There are a lot of introduced tree species in the area(as was the Victorian way) however we have not seen one like this on any of our travels to other parts of the Highlands.

Really looking forward to your input and hoping one/some of you might have the answer to this mystery, it's really bugging us.

All the best,

Sarah :)

  • It could possibly be a pittosporum. Wait and see if it has flowers later on which would help with identification.

It's a Nothofagus (Southern Beech). Probably N. dombeyi.

  • Thank you so much for all the responses! I've checked those out and WillDB it does certainly look like a Nothofagus and I think your suggestion of it being the dombeyi is probably also correct. I'll check out the rest of that family online whilst having a physical leaf next to me to identify and turn in my hand etc.

Thank you also so much to pansyface and Joyce Goldenlily, I appreciate your input and help so much.

    :)
