Wilting viburnum burkwoodii

turmericturmeric Posts: 830

Hi all, I noticed yesterday that my newly planted Viburnum burkwoodii's leaves were wilting on 2 of the 6 branches.  I planted it in early March and it's been kept moist.  I'm flummoxed as to why the leaves on certain branches have wilted when the leaves on the remaining branches look really healthy.  I dug it up this morning to make sure it's not dry and to check for vine weevil but it's wet and no sign of weevil.  I can take a photo if that helps but has anyone any ideas?

I planted one last autumn and it looked a bit rough last month until the new foliage came through. The old leaves have largely dropped off. Sometimes it's just a case of them getting established, and it also may drop some of the existing foliage, which isn't unusual on evergreens either.

I wouldn't worry unduly at this stage, if there's no obvious damage on the shrub image

Thanks Fairygirl.  It was planted in full sun as I was lead to believe it could take most conditions but do you think it would prefer shade?

  • Definitely not. It may be that this very sunny spell has put the plant under a bit of stress. The first thing that suffers is the foliage. See what the next few days does for it

It can cope with sun or shade so just give it time to settle in.  Patience is often a gardeners best friend but I find it helps to check the RHS website for cultivation info before planting new treasures as it helps avoid mistakes - https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/91671/Viburnum-x-burkwoodii/Details

Thanks to all.  I shall replant him this afternoon in his old spot and make sure he's well watered if this hot weather continues.  It was just so odd, with wilting leaves all along 2 branches and thriving, strong, healthy ones on the others.  I would have thought the whole shrub would wilt, but that's gardening for you, full of surprises.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend and this glorious weather.

Thanks nut.  I've tucked him back in, in his original spot and given him a drink.  Will keep an eye on him.  It has certainly been a hot weekend and the soil seems to dry out so quickly.
