Mahonia buckland
in Plants
I don't know what's wrong with it, the leaves are brown, it's bare half way down the trunk/stem. Think I can see green leaves growing at the base. What should I do with it??

anything brown is dead. If you only think you can see green leaves at the base they must be minute so it might be that this is dead/dying. That dead branch needs removing and if there is new growth at the base I'd give it a chance by removing the other plant in the picture

It looks like a young plant ... when was it planted ... has it been watered ... it's been a very dry year so far ...

ive had it well over a year, it was ok last year with flowers and berries on it and grew a little. I thought about digging up the yellow loosestrife but I'm worried about damaging the roots on the mahonia as they are so close.
difficult one, they will be entangled won't they. Could just cut the loosesttife back for down to give the base of the mahonia some space. a good watering and could maybe be disentangled in the autumn
I hope it survives, they're lovely plants. How long has it been brown?

Ages, I've just ripped up some loosestrife and cut off the dead branches. Should I cut the dead top off too?
There may be life there
It's hard to say whether to cut off that branch without actually seeing it. There's a look to a dead branch that doesn't show in a photo. But if the top's been brown for ages my guess is that branch is dead. See what other people think, more people will look this evening. Give it a couple of gallons of water. Don't feed it unless it starts growing.
