Alliums

I have a large number of blind alliums in my garden. I must admit they were planted hurriedly and not very deep. I have fed them with organic chicken manure. Is it worth digging them up when the foliage has died down and starting again, or should I buy more bulbs and take more time and care with planting next time. Hope someone can help me.

What makes you think they are blind?  None of my alliums have flowered yet ... Way too early ...

Ours are way behind this year.

I'm new to alliums, planted some little drumstick ones in the autumn "sphaerocephalon" (spelling?).

Think I read that the leaves die down before they flower in the summer.

They're one of my favourites Kitty - (good spelling too  image ) and the foliage is a bit messy but as long as you have it among other plants it's ok. They're quite tall though - so I hope you haven't planted them right at the front of your borders - although some of mine just flop around and it's quite nice !

The squirrels tend to dig them up, which is the main drawback, but they're so readily available and cheap that it's not too big a hardship.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

They're in a deep pot currently Fairy, another impulse buy that has no permanent home yet image.  There were over thirty bulbs in the bag so have layered them lasagne style.

The plan is to finally sort out the beds in the front garden into some kind of colour scheme. Work ground to a halt last autumn due to unforseen circumstances.

Thanks for the tip about the messy foliage image

Thanks for info re. flowering. I've looked into the depths of the leaves and no flower buds appear to be forming. I'll live in hope for another while.

I've just checked mine again ... the ones in the sunny south facing bed (Purple Sensation) have signs of flower spikes ... the ones in the west facing bed (in shade half the day) (Christophii) have no signs of buds at all.  They've bloomed beautifully there for the last couple of years.

Taken in just now, west facing bed up against a fence.

    Cheers

Why it's upside down I have no idea, it is the right way up on the preview lol
