Planting in area where cypresses have lived
in Plants
Ther have been 3 cypresses there for about 50 odd years, which we are in the process of removing, as they are dwarfing the small garden and nothing grows under them.
I wanted to plant shrub in the same area, once the cypresses are gone, but was wondering if I may need to improve the soil first.
I'll probably be planting a lilac in that spot, eventually.
many thanks.

A few years ago I took out 28 huge conifers on a 100' run, all I did was dig it over and put in plenty of chicken pellets, others will probably recommend other feeds so I suppose it all depends on what you want.
Lilacs don't like acid soil so if the conifers have thrived you may well have acid soil. Maybe best to do a soul test before you buy one.
I should think the new plants will grow better if you do. Otherwise you'll have a limited choice of plants that will grow in impoverished soil.

Good old fashioned muck is what is needed to replenish the soil [ well rotted manure, or garden compost ]

Thanks all. I have no way of testing the soil sadly, and am leaving this wonderful garden in a weeks time...was hoping to plant up a lilac for my host before I left, as it's her favourite plant!
maybe I should choose a less high maintenance spot.
