fuschia riccartonii
in Plants
I put in a row of fuschia riccartonii to form a hedge across my garden last year and was pleased with it. However, this year there is no hedge, just shoots starting for the new plants and nothing growing on last years stems. Have I chosen the wrong fuschia for a hedge?

Unless you live in a very mild area fuchsia is not a good choice for a hedge. I've seen tree like fuchsias and hedges in SW Ireland and I think they grow like that in SW England. For most of us the top dies and it grows from the base every year. Occasionally mine have regrown on the old stems and I've left them but usually regret it as they never look so good. There are no tougher fuchsias than that one, you haven't got the wrong fuchsia.

Thank you Nutcutlet. I will cut the bare bits back now and enjoy the plant for what it is - it is beautiful, and the flowers are long lasting.
Will rethink my longed-for hedge.
