Bracken fungus in a dead trunk
It's growing from the base of a very old decaying stump, of a ligustrum that was cut down years ago.
The original tree was on its was out before the fungus became apparent.
Could spores spread to other areas of the garden?

Bracket, sorry!
Exactly like this one:

fungal spores are everywhere. Fungi are part of the breaking down of dead plants. They feed on dead wood, not live wood.
