Ideas for bog garden

AndyDeanAndyDean Posts: 157

Inspired by the latest issue of GW magazine, I thought I'd try doing a bog garden in a pot. Promptly went and bought an old sink from a local supplier, as I thought this would be perfect if I plug up the hole.

I'd like to grow some pollinator-friendly plants. Any suggestions most welcome!

Thanks.

What sort of depth and general size has the sink got Andy?

You'll still need a bit of drainage so that the soil doesn't just become stagnant. If you block the hole completely it'll fill up with water over time.

Marsh marigolds would be fine although the yellow one can take over a bit. I have Irises next to my pond - the little Chrysographes ones, which would give a bit of height. Astilbes would also like it - but look for a smaller variety. The usual ones would look a bit out of place as they can be quite tall.

Lots of ferns will be happy there too. image

Just remembered , Cardamine pratensis ( Lady's Smock ) will love it and so will the bees image

    Thanks Fairygirl!

I'd thought iris. Astilbe and lady's smock are a good idea. Had an orange-tip in the garden today, and I think their caterpillars like lady's smock, so that would be nice!

The sink is about 3x2ft, and about 1ft deep. So not enormous - I'm guessing marsh marigold probably not the best idea.
