vibernum wedding cake tree

Last year my tree was beautiful in a very large pot.  This year half of the branches have not produced leaves at all.  This is not vibernum beetle.  I did top up the pot with fresh compost and slightly raised the plant.   I thought maybe ants ? Please has anyone any ideas.   Thank you.

Ants will only take up residence in a pot if the compost is on the dry side - has your tree had plenty of water?
