Raised bed position issues

image

Hi all,

Our new garden is a medium suburban garden backing out onto woodland. There was a patch at the end of the garden beside the shed which needed some attention, so I decided to build some raised beds.

My garden is east facing. The raised beds are positioned at the end of the garden on the right hand side so north facing?. Behind them in a wooden fence and on one side a wooden shed. Therefore they only get a very small amount of direct sunshine but do have plenty of light.

Ive researched some veg to grow that will tolerate some shade (lettuce, beetroot, chard etc) but I'm just wondering if people think I will have enough light to successfully grow a decent crop? Any opinions are welcome! This was the only area I had available to place the beds so can't move them.

thanks

Those are some beautiful raised beds, great job!  With those sort of veg you mentioned you should be fine.  Just give them a bit more space that you might for a traditional raised bed or square foot method style.  Be bold and experiment a bit too.  I grew all sorts of things in pots in the near total shade between two tall buildings next to my flat in London a few years ago.  Runner beans, potatoes, peas, etc, as well as the shade tolerant salads and such.

Could you paint the fences white?  Or install some acrylic mirrors?  Something to reflect in even more light?
