raised bed capacity

Is there a minimum capacity for raised beds - to prevent them drying out?

  • If the bed is over open ground, i.e. plants can root down into the soil below the built up bed, then about a railway sleeper's depth is ideal.  Makes for easy construction. However, one that is built onto a hard base will need to be a bit deeper and ideally should have drainage built in to the construction, either by holes driven through the base or by 'weep' holes along the sides. For example, a cattle trough holds ample depth of soil for vegetables and, indeed, many types of plant, so long as watering is properly done.
