Clematis texensis
Anyone growing any of the texensis varieties? I'm thinking about 'Princess Diana' for a north facing fence (discussed in a previous post). I've only seen one growing in someone's garden before, and thought it looked great. Sort of stopped me in my tracks. Is it OK for north facing though? Someone had recommended C. alpina but I prefer the idea of a group 3 and having the flowers later in the year.

I've got that in a deep dark thicket, it doesn't flower much there. North wall but open could do better
(I didn't plant it in a deep dark thicket, that encroached over time)
In the sticks near Peterborough
Princess Diana is a fabulous clematis. I had her in full sun in my Belgian garden but she should do fine in a northerly aspect as long as there is light and not full shade.
Duchess of Albany is another possibility of you want pink - paler but with a deeper bar and the same tulip shaped flowers. There's also Betty Corning which is pale lilac with deeper mauve bars and her flowers are perfumed.
I think the one I had seen was 'Etoile Rose'. It was very arresting. I like that deeper colour and the drooping flowers, but from what I've read, Princess Diana is powdery mildew resistant. I don't know how concerned about mildew I should be.
I have many different texensis, including the species, Princess Diana is a stunner, herbaceous, late to appear every Spring but very rewarding flowers, mildew free. Etoile Rose is viticella group, part texensis but more viticella, and is prone to mildew. New on the scene are Maxima, bigger and brighter than Princess Diana, and Coralie, new here this season. Betty Corning, which someone mentioned previous, is a viticella x crispa hybrid.
I bought texensis Princess Kate and told the nursery owner " I'm buying this despite the name, NOT because of it. So long as she's as pretty as her mother in law"
Thanks for the information guys. I'm digging the hole in preparation for my decision.
Now I picture it, Lady Di might be a bit too vivid. I love bold colour but not in this particular spot.. Princess Kate looks excellent as it's more whitish. Are there any other trouble-free group 3's with a more subdued plummy red or mauvey colour that I might like, Richard? Nice foliage is helpful too.
I have to add, the planting hole I'm giving it is not exactly ideal - it's a 3L pot sized hole in a concrete path! I've scraped out as much hardcore from underneath but it's quite gritty down there. I'm hitting good soil below though.
Lol... all this time I've been sifting through Hawthornes nursery in another browser, without realising I'm speaking to the man himself!
