Your plant is a fern - those are last year's leaves. You'll see new leaves growing from the centre of the base of the plant - they look like shepherd's crooks unfurling
Cut the old leaves off down low being careful not to cut the new fronds. Very soon your fern will look better than ever.
I cut all mine back yesterday.

Yes I will cut them back tonight as it is looking very untidy. Is spring the right time to cut them back or should it be done earlier? Just asking as then I will know for next year.
