Painting the bottom of trees
When we bought our house a year or so ago the trees in the garden were painted black to about 30cm from the ground. Does anyone know why this would have been done, how often do we need to do it and what to do it with?

It sounds like a grease band or grease paint to stop bugs crawling up the trunk and over wintering in the crevices, I'm not sure about the height being 30 cm though I still feet and inches?
