I soaked mine overnight and they were nicely plumped up before planting. I planted mine with the knobbly bits (clawlike) pointing upwards, if that's any help. I'm sure which ever way you plant them they'll be ok.

Not at all - just fire them in the ground any which way. Only the plants with bigger corms like cyclamen or begonia have a 'right way up' side.
