afternoon all.

this is the third year I've had this peony and it has never produced a flower stem, just lots of these leaf stems.

any ideas of how to get it to flower ?

ive heard they don't like being interfered with so I've never unearthed it or replanted it.

I had some bare root peonies bought as a gift from Sara Raven, I planted them and they look much like yours do. Apparently it can take 1-3 years before they produce flowers, they just need time to establish. They don't like being moved but if you need to move them wait until the plant is dormant in late autumn.

Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

I think it needs planting out. They don't mind being moved, that's one of many gardening myths. If that's not possible, a bigger pot on its own

I inherited quite a lot, some flowered some haven't,dug upp two clumps, split and given away as they're all red and I like pink and white! I understand they don't like to be planted deep, I did replant some right in a back corner last autumn, we'll see how they do, they've grown well but don't know if they'll flower

If peonies need to be moved then autumn is the time to do it.  I agree with nutcutlet re the myth about moving peonies.  You should ensure you don't plant it any deeper than it already is, in fact I tend to err on the side of caution and plant them just a fraction higher.  Your peony would much prefer to be in the ground and since it's already in a container you can do that anytime in my opinion.  Is that bark mulch you've put on the surface of the pot?  If so, remove it from the base of the plant when planting out.

My mum moved house 4 years ago and moved hers with her.  She had no flowers for 3 years then a big bloomlast year.  I was informed they sulk when moved.

    See original post

Mine didn't sulk but your mum's was probably out of the ground longer if she was moving house

Thanks. Lots of comments to think about.  I must admit it's only in that pot because I thought it was on it's way out, sort of last chance saloon pot!  Maybe I'll plant out once the tulips have bloomed and see what happens next year.  I've got a feeling I may have planted too deep too as I was a bit newer at this gardening lark three years ago.
