Levelling garden lawn

Hi, my wife and I are looking to do our garden up in time for summer and need some advice on levelling our lawn, which is slightly uneven and bumpy in places.

Ideally need to do the work myself with hand tools only (due to access issues).

I've looked into a couple of methods, with applying topsoil over our existing lawn seeming the most straight forward. Would this be correct??

Alternatively could I dig up the lawn and apply top soil straight onto the soil underneath, levelling in the process??

And do I have to consider drainage?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Danny

It all depends on how uneven the lawn his. If you have bumps in the lawn, then remove that section of lawn and check whats underneath thats may be creating that bump. If you have depressions, then level out the depression with sieved top soil and reseed. Drainage problems can be due to excessive clay sub soil can be improved with forking the lawn. Using a hollow tine fork that removes cylindrical sections of soil. Then sweep sieved top soil or John innes

compost with a mixure of Hort. Grit in to the holes. This will allow water, air and light to the sub soil that will promote new growth
