Growing magnolia tree (help)

I'm a complete beginner to gardening and have just bought a magnolia tree and have potted it up in a large ceramics pot in ericacesous compost. I didn't really loosen the root ball however. Should I repot this? Also how often should I water? Any help would be much appreciated

I suggest you have a read of this RHS article which contains advice on camellis in general plus growing them in containers - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=327

I think it will depend on the variety of Magnolia you are growing as well as how big the container is matthewbramley, Here is a link with some advice about growing both in the ground and in containers.

I think it will depend on how big the container is and what variety of Magnolia you've got.

  • imageThe flowers have gone a bit brown today. Is this normal?

Sorry.  Posted the wrong link.  It's a magnolia stellata and teh RHS thinks they can be grown in pots but I would suggest the largest one you can manage so as not to restrict the roots too much as this will reduce growth.

The brown is either frost damage or just natural aging as the flowers go over.
