Raspberries when do they start getting leaves

At the end of last year I was given some raspberries canes with roots that a friend had finished with in her garden. I planted them in good soil but they are not showing any signs of life. Now I think they are August fruiting canes. Should there be buds by now or should I assume they are dead and buy more?

I'd wait a while - if you only planted them this winter they'll be getting their roots established first - then they'll begin to throw up some new shoots.

You should have cut any old canes down to ground level in February - if that hasn't been done I'd do it now, and give them some fish, blood and bone and an organic mulch.

If the soil is dry (it's been a dry spring)  a couple of buckets full of water won't go amiss.

I have one cane that was there before the winter ones and that is shooting. I have 12 others and they are looking dead. I cut them back before I planted them.

So the one that's been there longer is shooting first?  That's as I would expect. Mine have been in four or five years and are only just shooting now.

I'd leave it a bit longer before giving up hope.

Last year my newly planted bare root canes took ages to appear. This year they are now sprouting vigorously. As Dove says, wait. Not all of mine survived, I had a 60% survival rate from two different suppliers.
