Bark eaten off my hydrangea

I planted a hydrangea annabelle last year but now most of the bark has been eaten off it by deer I assume. I have attached an image to show the damage. Is there a likelihood that this plant will survive? Or is all hope out?

Annabelle should throw up new shoots from the base, so all is not lost
in general, if deer damage stems, and the damage does not go completely round the stem, then you can "repair" them by tying strips of black bin bags round the area like a bandage. You have to leave it on for a couple of years, but it works (the voice of bitter experience
). However, if the damage goes all the way round the branch has been "ringed", and it won't survive. Hope this helps for future attacks. I have a stash of dark green bin bags specially for bandages - looks slightly less unsightly than the black

You should probably,at least, be seeing buds by now. Most around my area are showing first leaves.
Annabelle is usually quite late. All my other hydrangeas are in full leaf now, but the Annabelles are only just breaking bud .....they behave quite differently to other hydrangeas. But are the most glorious of all, i think
Oh, that's shame, most of the bark has gone from the stems. I suppose that's the end of my beautiful hydrangea.
you might be lucky - it should throw up new stems from the base
Fingers crossed! Thanks Chicky !
