FENCE CREOCOTING

Hi Everyone, we have a problem with our fence.  When it was quite new, last year, we painted it with Barretine creocote.  It looked fine for a while but now it looks as if it has never been painted!  The creocote has been totally washed off.  We had always believed that fences didn't need redoing more often than about every 5 years, but not with this stuff.

I should be really grateful for any advice you could offer relating to which brand of creocote you have used and found good, rather than a waste of money, time and energy.

Hi Chloe, they are TAFFS panels, the overlapping sort.  They were drinking the creocote like dipsomaniacs but nothing is left on them by now.  It has disappeared, as water would when poured over a wooden surface.  Do you use creocote yourself?  How do you find it?

    Hi Artemis

We too have much the same problem with fences and shed since the creosote ban.  I understand the problems with the environment but but surely replacing it with something decent is not utterly impossible.  I read elsewhere that some people add diesel or engine oil; I'm rather reluctant to use either just in case I cause harm to the environment or the garden itself.  The lack of advice from the gardeners using the forum might suggest the same problem is faced by others too.

    Hi Phaidra

A problem, isn't it?  Painting the whole fence every year is something I'm not prepared to do; so, I'll keep praying that someone has found something good that the rest of us can use too!

    Hi Chloe

I think many smells are beloved by some and loathed by others.  I'm sorry, though about the unpleasant childhood memories.

  • Hi Artemis

I too have used this particular creocote brand and found it not particularly long lasting.  Annoying!

Artemis, if you search "creosote", you will find lots of info on the subject, provided by other gardeners but I don't think there's one that is believed to be nearly as good as creosote.

Please let us know if you manage to find one that really does the job!

How right you're, Danae!  There's pages of it but I still didn't see one creosote substitute that has been found to be its equal, unless I managed to miss it, of course.  However, I won't give up on my quest!

    Hi Artemis

I saw a neighbour of mine this afternoon treating his fence with a creosote-like substance, called Creoseal Plus.  He told me a friend had recommended it to him with the clear warning that though good, it would not be as long lasting as real creosote, but nothing is.

    Perhaps worth considering?

Thank you, Phaidra.  I have already googled it.  It seems promising.  Thank your neighbour for me!

    Pleasure, Artemis.

By the way, I'm rather intrigued by the number following your name.  Royal ambitions? image

    Artemis-the Third?

Me?  Nah, I'm the humble sort.  The number is a gift from Gardenersworld.  When registering, I wrote ArtemisHP, but they decided 3 suited me better!  I imagine there's an Artemis and an Artemis2 already.  We must be a holy trinity of a kind!
