Red Camelias

I am trying to help a friend to change  a small garden space at the entrance of her house into a more fuss free and modern garden.  There is a camelia (red) which she would like to keep and she wants all the pots to disappear.

I was going to suggest some grasses and a bit of decking.

Are there any other plants which you think would be suitable for this area to go along with the red camelia?

She also wanted to try a japanese acer -- not so sure whether itwoulimaged be suitable.image

how about some fatsia japonica, skimming japonica and maybe a nice lace cap hydrangea like lanath white Or some ferns.

i would avoid decking as everyone I know with it complains how slippery it gets and scrubbing it and rtreating it each spring is a pain.

i have assumed it is a shady area due to the camelia.
