Last year I planted some alliums and liked them so I purchased some more and planted them in the autumn. However the ones I planted the year before don't seem to be coming up again this year. Is that normal?
Not sure, what type are they and are the ones you planted last year the same type? I know my Christophii ones started showing in January but the purple sensation was probably a month later, then the mount Everest a few weeks after that. In fact the Everest are only just through the soil.
Well I think part of the problem is that I've planted loads more autumn just passed so they could be coming through I just can't remember exactly where I planted them haha. But I'm 80% sure I know the locations
Radolpo - I have quite heavy clay soil and mine normally last 2or 3 years before disappearing. I top up every autumn now, to keep the display going strong. Love alliums
Never grown sweetcorn with them though - maybe Chloe is talking about onions rather than the ornamental alliums?
Squirrels take the little ones as they're not buried so deep. They eat a fair few of my Sphaerocephalons, but they're inexpensive, so I do the same as chicky and add a few each year in empty spots.
I'm on clay too, but most of mine are in purpose built raised beds in this garden, so that's a lot easier to create the best conditions than in open ground.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Those I've grown have all been reliably perennial
In the sticks near Peterborough
