Acer stems turned black this year

  • Really is disheartening, especially in your case with more than one shrub suffering. I have been advised 3% hydrogen peroxide which I will try and otherwise I think I will just try to provide the most optimum conditions for the health of the tree. If I take were the branches, I couldn't just remove them but clearly that isn't an option either!

  • This has happened to one of my acer trees, but new branches have grown from the rootstock, which I think may be the "Going Green" - 'Sonkootgre' variety.  So I will still have a tree, albeit a different one, and a nice one too.

Rootstock will be the species which is a nice tree in it's own right but gets a lot bigger.
The photo looks like black all the way round at the base of the trunk? I'm afraid you need to prepare for the worst, I don't think there's any way back from that.
I adore JMs but they are so susceptible to vw it is very disheartening. I lost a Sango Kaku to vine weevil this summer, the cultivars are just not very robust unfortunately.
