Bolting red cabbage

in Fruit & veg
Hello, could anyone give this novice veggie grower some advice on bolting red cabbage? I planted them late last year and they did quite well over winter, and I was hopeful that they would form a nice heart and be ready to pick early next month, but instead they suddenly bolted and produced a seed head as soon as the weather warmed up a bit! Any idea what I did wrong?

I always think of red cabbage as a winter veg, to be sown in the spring, planted out in the summer and harvested in the autumn/winter.
I imagine that having come through the winter, your cabbages have experienced the temperatures warming up and decided that they're in their second year of growing and it's time to flower and produce seed to further the species.
Have a look at your seed packet ... when does it suggest you should sow the seeds?

I bought them as plugs in October. I've got the labels somewhere, I'll dig them out and check. I also have some green cabbage, bought and planted at the same time as plugs. They seem to be fine at the moment - so much to learn!
