sweet peas yellow leaves

Dear All

Could anyone give me some advice on my sweet peas.

I have grown them in cool greenhouse from last sep/oct.

They were all doing well, now some of the leaves are turning yellow and dropping off.

Any ideas or advice would be most welcome.

Could they all perish. Oh no I hope note.

Hi Eileen - it sounds like they need potting on. They'll have used up the nutrients in the compost you've sown in, especially if it was a seed compost. Are they planted in pots or trays? They need a good deep root run, so take a look at the base to see if there are roots growing out through the holes.

They also probably need hardening off a bit if thye've been in there all winter, ready for getting outside in their final planting place.

Hi Thanks for the information. Much appreciated. I have repotted and put them outside. Would it be safe do you think to leave them outside in pots at night before planting into final position in a few weeks time. Or should I bring them in at night back into the greenhouse. Thanks

Depending on where you are, and how exposed, Eileen - I'd give them a few days of 'out during the day and in at night' , then leave them outside in a reasonably sheltered spot till you're ready to plant them in their final position.

Sweet peas are really very hardy, but when they've been grown undercover over winter, they just need a bit of time to get adjusted to outside conditions. At this time of year, it's really just a case of keeping them sheltered from any wild, windy weather while they're still quite small and vulnerable
