When should I see growth appearing on soft fruits & apple I planted as bare-root last autumn?

Pete.8Pete.8 Posts: 11,340

October last year I ordered and planted 15 raspberry canes (5 early, 5 mid-season and 5 autumn), 5 blackcurrant bushes (Ben Connan) and a Hereford Russet apple, all from Chris Bowers.

There's no sign of any growth on anything yet, but an established apple (Katy) is already in leaf.

Should I be concerned yet?

Good idea pansy. I scraped a little bark from the very top of the apple and it is bright green, so hopefully that's ok.
I pruned all the raspberries and blackcurrants down to the ground shortly after planting as per instructions and no sign of any movement yet image

I was about to ask the same question - 5 autumn fruiting raspberry canes in containers pruned back in Feb and nothing.  Thanks for pre-empting my question!

    As an update -

Of the 15 raspberry canes I planted, there are only signs of growth on one of them.
Of the 5 blackcurrant bushes I planted only 1 has growth on it.

I've had a look under the soil surface and can't see any sign of anything growing on the no-showers.

Thanks pansy - I sent an email a 30mins ago. I'll see what they come back with initially.
Unfortunately I only read the google reviews after I placed the order....
There's a tiny leaf appearing on the apple tree, but I'm not convinced it's an apple leaf - time will tell

Very disappointing - I was looking forward to home-grown rasps next summer, now looks like it'll be 2019!

You can probably get some autumn raspberries in pots in the GC which may well give you fruit this year. They are only just coming in to growth now really, so plenty of time to get some in.

    Shared commiserations Andy

I did spot some the other day at £8 a pop in a GC - I had an "8 QUID FOR A RASPBERRY!!' moment, but now I've calmed down, maybe I'll just get 1.

The silver lining i suppose is the the one that is growing well now is Autumn Bliss, so I may get some rasps this year after all and I'll see about an alternative supplier for planting in the autumn for the others

So autumn raspberries not showing yet is ok?

Well - I only sent the email an hour ago and I've had a reply, so that's impressive -

It's very unlikely that you have lost about 95% of your order and if you had it would indicate some sort of horticultural problem; a more likely explanation is that the stock is still simply dormant - it's still fairly early for non established plantings which can break dormancy well into May so there is time yet.

So I said I'll wait and see what happens..
