Mystery Plant

This plant turned up at the edge of a flower border last year, I'm guessing thanks to a bird.  It seems to grow like a viburnum with flowers coming first in early spring followed by leaves, but is that what it is and how big might it grow ?   Any suggestions would be gratefully received

Could it be a type of Daphne? I must admit, I have never heard of them growing from seed, though.

Daphne mezereum. They seed about if they're happy.

  • That's brilliant - thanks so much. It's certainly a striking plant and a quick web search suggests it can stay where it is size-wise.  I was a bit worried it was going to grow into more of a tree.

They are beautiful, cost a small fortune and can be difficult to grow. You are a very lucky gardener!

  • It is one of 3 pink flowering plants that the birds have kindly planted for me, all perfectly colour co-ordinated with what's around them, but by far the most spectacular. They are also far more successful with sunflowers than I am so I'm thinking of putting my feet up a bit more and letting them get on with it.image
