How to prune 3 stem Annabelle Hydrangea?

sarah372sarah372 Posts: 1

I had a very small Annabelle Hydrangea planted last year summer as part of a garden redesign.

This Spring it currently consists of three tall stems with several buds and I have no idea whether these should be pruned or not to encourage new growth lower down? It looks nothing like my other Hydrangeas, although they were not such spindly samples when they arrived!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I think there are two schools of thought with H. Annabelle.  One says cut all the stems back quite hard - I have never been that brave, but its meant to give you even bigger flowers.  I have never been that brave and I cut mine back to a sprouting bud at about this time of year.  If its a newly planted shrub, I would suggest you do the same this year, to let it get a bit more established.
