When should i repot chillis?
in Fruit & veg
So i started off some chillis a few weeks ago (hot wax) and now that they have came through im wondering if i should take them out of the propagator and repot them yet. Not to put outside but to put in the window sill.Thing is the propagator is a bit too wide for the south facing window sill, so i figured if i repot them in 3 inch pots they would get more sun because they are currently in the north facing window.

The two 'leaves' they have now are cotyledons, not real leaves. Only when they have some proper leaves does it indicate that they are developing a root system That's when they'll be ready for pricking out.
Can you find a way of supporting the propagator on the south facing windowsill ... it won't be for long. .

Thanks, i will try and makeshift a way round it.
I repot as soon as the chilli appears above soil. I use a teaspoon to gently lift the chilli and a good 1 inch depth of soil and place into a same sized hole in a larger pot of compost. I do this early because when young the root is short, the older it gets, the longer it gets and easier to disturb. In practice it probably makes little difference, but I like my method, it's easy. Most people suggest as per Dove.
As Dove says, you need to give them light, a E, S or W facing window is best. N facing is unsuitable. I use a CFL lamp to give them extra light in the early weeks, to compensate for the short days.
Thanks for the advice Leif2, i think i will leave them where they are for now but just stick them in my south facing window
I re-potted mine at the weekend and took a picture straight afterwards. I'm not an expert on the correct time to repot but I've done it now for a few years and i have not lost any plants through the transfer.
