Advice on rose

Tez70Tez70 Posts: 2

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and to gardening so I hope I'm posting in the right place!

I have recently inherited a rose from my nan who recently passed away. I have no idea what type it is but would like some advice on if it can be planted into the ground or if it should be kept in a pot and just move it to a larger one? also I'm thinking I should I be pruning it but I have no idea where to start and I don't want to do it wrong as it means a lot to me and  I would hate to lose it.

Many thanks.image

Lots of people on here who know much more than me on roses. But it looks like a good specimen to me! You can see all the new and healthy growth.

You're probably a bit too late to prune it now....theoretically it should have been pruned at the beginning of the month. You may just be able to get away with it if you want too though.

If it were me, i would prune it, and plant it out.. somewhere with good amount of sun! Dig a big hole, fill it with compost, some grit and growmore (fertilizer).. water it well then stick it in. Keep it watered, but not drenched.

The plant does look quite congested, so  when you prune take off all the dead branches first, then the branches which are cross over each other and rubbing against each other. Then you can take a third off each the whole thing. You essentially looking for an open expanse in the bush which allows some airflow.. Dont worry, you can't really over-prune roses as they'll bounce right back!!

I'll let others chime in who know 100x more than me now...

Thanks so much for your reply pokhim! that is all very helpful advice, can I just ask one more question..... the place I was thinking of planting it gets full sun up until about 2pm would that be okay? as at the moment in it's pot it is in full sun all day.
